Steve-O Just Told Us What Jackass Paid. Bam Was Right to Leave.

Steve-O's 'comical' season one paycheck is the best argument yet for why Bam Margera hosting Fishtank Season 5 makes complete financial sense.

Jackass made its stars famous and, apparently, not much else.

Steve-O revealed this week, per LADbible, that the amount he earned from Jackass season one was "comical", his word, not ours. He did not mean comical in a good way. He meant comical the way you describe a check when you show it to a friend and they wince.

Nobody should be surprised. The early 2000s were not a great era for talent compensation in reality-adjacent TV. But the timing of Steve-O's admission lands differently when you remember that Bam Margera spent roughly two years trying to get back into the Jackass fold, was excluded from the final film except in archival footage, publicly said "you couldn't offer me enough money" to return, and is now hosting an independent streaming show on Fishtank that he controls, that he appears in daily, and that gave him two cameo appearances before offering him the top job.

That is not a tragedy arc. That is a business decision that aged well.

The discourse around Bam has spent months treating Fishtank as a consolation prize, a soft landing for someone who burned bridges with the mainstream. Steve-O's earnings reveal complicates that framing. If the bridge Bam burned led to a paycheck so small it registers as a punchline, maybe burning it was the move.

Bam broke his thumb street skating last week, which is its own concern. He has been hospitalized twice in 2026. The health questions are real and this correspondent does not dismiss them. But the career question, the one about whether he made a mistake walking away from Jackass and toward Fishtank, looks increasingly settled.

Steve-O earned a comical amount from the franchise that made him. Bam is now the host of a show built around his name, his energy, and his ramps in a living room. History will note which of those arrangements respects the talent more.
