Bam Margera Says He Was 'Set Up to Fail' on Jackass 4. The Internet Is Processing That.

A new claim about his removal from Jackass 4 filming landed this week. The reactions have been, predictably, all over the place.

In the weeks since Jackass: Best and Last dropped and the press tour churned through every possible angle on Bam Margera's absence, a new claim surfaced: Bam, speaking to MSN, alleged he was "set up to fail" before being removed from Jackass 4 filming. That framing, arriving in the middle of an already-crowded news cycle about the franchise's final chapter, cracked the discourse open again.

To understand the reaction, you have to understand the timeline. Bam did not attend the premiere. His parents went in his place. Knoxville cried. Steve-O sent him a private message demanding accountability. And now, in the same breath that Bam is announced as the host of Fishtank Season 5, he is reframing his removal from the franchise that made him famous not as a failure but as a structural trap. That reframing is doing a lot of work.

Part of the internet received it with sympathy. According to comments and posts reviewed by this publication, a segment of longtime Bam fans argued the claim was consistent with what they had long suspected: that the production environment around Jackass 4 was not built to accommodate someone in active addiction, and that expecting sobriety from Bam while surrounding him with the exact conditions that preceded prior relapses was, at minimum, a failure of planning. These are not new arguments, but Bam making them directly gave them new weight.

Another corner was less generous. Several observers noted that accountability and victimhood do not always sit easily together, and that Steve-O's very public call for Bam to "take accountability" just days earlier made the "set up to fail" framing land differently for some. The timing was not lost on anyone.

Then there is the Steve-O dimension. According to Yahoo's coverage of the TMZ podcast, Steve-O sounded off specifically on Bam's potential return to Jackass during the same week. He has not, according to anything reviewed by this publication, publicly addressed the "set up to fail" claim directly. His silence on that specific point has itself become part of what people are arguing about.

The History of Jackass retrospective published by Yahoo on July 1 framed the franchise's arc as a straight line from scrappy MTV chaos to cultural institution. Bam appears in that story as a fixture, which is accurate and also, given everything, a little strange to read right now. The Exclaim piece asking where the Jackass cast is now placed Bam in the context of his upcoming Fishtank hosting duties, a sentence that would have read as absurd five years ago and now reads as just the situation.

What the internet cannot quite agree on is whether "set up to fail" is a reckoning or a deflection. Maybe it is both. That tension is not going to resolve before Fishtank Season 5 starts filming.
