Vanity Fair Just Put Hasan Piker on Its Power List. The Internet Is Processing.

The Twitch streamer who has spent two months being used as a Republican boogeyman just got placed next to the Pope in Vanity Fair's New Establishment 2026. Reactions are, predictably, a journey.

Darlings, Vanity Fair has released its New Establishment 2026 list, and Hasan Piker is on it, sitting in the same rarefied air as Elon Musk, AOC, and the actual Pope. New York Magazine simultaneously dropped a piece headlined The Inescapable Hasan Pikerwhich, given the last six weeks of his life, feels less like a compliment and more like a cry for help on behalf of the entire media landscape.

Per the Reddit thread on r/LivestreamFail, Piker apparently recounted the Vanity Fair shoot on stream and found the whole thing funny, telling some story about taking the photos. His chat, reliably, lost its mind.

On the left-adjacent corners of the internet, the Vanity Fair placement is being read as vindication, the argument being that the Republican apparatus spent months trying to make him radioactive and instead handed him a magazine cover slot. The logic tracks, even if the optics of celebrating institutional media recognition while calling yourself an anti-establishment leftist are, shall we saycomplicated.

Conservative commentary is doing something else entirely. Rasmussen Reports published a piece framed as "Voters Reject Hasan Piker's Pro-Hamas Rhetoric," which landed the same day as the Vanity Fair news, and the contrast is being played for all it's worth in right-wing media spaces. The argument, loosely paraphrased, is that mainstream media crowning him proves the point about elite liberal institutions being out of step with ordinary voters. Whether a Rasmussen framing constitutes a data point or a press release is a question nobody in those spaces is asking.

Abdul El-Sayed turned up on Fox News to say, according to the segment, that "this campaign was never about a streamer in California," which is a sentence a man says when the streamer in California has become unavoidably central to his campaign. We wish him clarity in this difficult time. And if that sounds familiar, it's because El-Sayed has been doing versions of this distancing move since August, when he first stepped back from Piker over comments about Jewish Americans, and it has not appreciably reduced the number of times Piker appears in his press coverage.

The Texas Observer weighed in with a substantive piece arguing that Piker's UT Austin appearance actually put the state's Campus Protection Act to a real legal test, which is the kind of thing that gets lost when the same story is also generating Jesse Watters bits. The News Record ran an opinion asking whether influencers belong in politics at all, using the Paul brothers' Pentagon visit alongside Piker as its two data points, which is a comparison Piker would probably find both insulting and hilarious.

CGTN, the Chinese state broadcaster, published a piece asking why "Chinamaxxing" is taking over social media and crediting Piker as the origin point. So to summarize the week: Vanity Fair, New York Magazine, Fox News, Rasmussen, a Texas law journal, and Chinese state media. My loves, the man is truly inescapable, and he did not even have to leave his streaming chair to get there.
