Tomi Lahren Just Compared Ms. Rachel to Hasan Piker. The Internet Has Thoughts.
A Fox News host, a college newspaper, and the LivestreamFail subreddit all have opinions about the same Twitch streamer this week. Welcome to October.
Darlings, the discourse has reached toddler television. On October 4, Tomi Lahren went on Fox News and, per the segment, declared that Ms. Rachel, the wildly popular children's YouTube educator, is "no different than Hasan Piker in a headband and overalls."
Ms. Rachel. The woman who teaches two-year-olds to say "more please."
Reactions online ranged from baffled to openly delighted, with a significant portion of observers noting that this comparison does more for Piker's mainstream name recognition than anything his own channel could manufacture. The audacity of the framing is almost architectural: in attempting to make Ms. Rachel scary, Lahren has accidentally made Piker cozy. Per the clip, no specific policy position or statement from Ms. Rachel was cited to support the comparison, which, darling, that is not a comparison.
Meanwhile, the Cornell Daily Sun published an op-ed on October 4 asking, plainly, "Why Should We Condemn Hasan Piker?" The piece, according to its framing, pushes back on the wave of institutional condemnation that followed his Cornell appearance and questions whether the pile-on reflects genuine principle or political convenience. Coming from a student paper at the very campus where the "river to the sea" controversy exploded, the piece lands with some weight. Critics online immediately called it naive. Supporters called it the only honest question anyone has asked in weeks. Both camps appear to be talking past each other at high volume, which is, at this point, the only mode available.
And then there is the LivestreamFail corner of the universe, which is doing what it does: a clip of streamer David Mauricio allegedly playing a Hasan Piker trivia game surfaced on the subreddit October 4, submitted by a user and immediately generating the expected ratio of genuine engagement to bit commentary. Whether Mauricio's performance on said trivia constitutes a meaningful data point about anything is unclear. The subreddit does not require clarity to have opinions.
If this all feels like a journey, it's because it is. And if the Tomi Lahren comparison feels familiar in spirit, it's because the past several weeks have established a clear pattern: every attempt to make Piker radioactive generates at least one piece of content that inadvertently extends his reach into a new demographic. Fox News viewer households now contain the name "Hasan Piker." Toddler-adjacent households may be next.
Keep receipts, my loves, because the Fox News to children's programming pipeline is not something we expected to be covering this quarter, and yet here we are.
