Here is the thing about the UW booking that the outrage machine keeps skating past: a public university booking a controversial political commentator for a paid speaking event is not a scandal. It is a speaker series. The question, the actual stakes question, is what this booking signals about Piker's trajectory from "guy who screams into a mic for six hours" to "campus speaker with a suggested ticket price."

Sean Hannity went on Fox News after the primary to report, per the Fox segment, that El-Sayed refused to condemn Piker's "radical beliefs." Laura Ingraham called Piker an "entitled brat" in her own Fox News segment. Dana Loesch contributed a Fox Business hit. This is approximately the seventh straight day of Fox News scheduling Hasan Piker content, which is the kind of earned media you cannot buy, and which his subscriber count presumably thanks every morning.

Now consider: per the New York Post on August 7, James Carville, fresh off Bernie Sanders publicly telling him to start his own party, is apparently floating the possibility of becoming a Republican under the right conditions. My loves, we wish him strength in this trying time of his own making.

The Daily Wire noted, per their August 6 piece, that CNN gave El-Sayed a chance on air to renounce Piker and he did the opposite. El-Sayed already called Piker "a streamer" in the post-win distancing move covered separately here, but apparently managed to thread that needle publicly while keeping the coalition intact. Times of Israel ran a piece titled "Hasan Piker, Donald Trump, and the death of the political moderate." Whether that headline is an accusation or an epitaph depends entirely on your priors. Al-Quds, the Arabic-language newspaper, published a piece on Piker's impact on Gen Z and the Palestinian cause, which is genuinely new geography for his press coverage and suggests the signal is now reaching audiences the American political press is not tracking at all.
