The James Charles Google News Feed Is Now Serving Him His Own Old Controversies

A September 1 snapshot of the feed shows the McManus obituary streak continuing alongside a 2021 BuzzFeed DM timeline and a 2020 Teen Vogue collab backlash piece. The algorithm has apparently decided to do a retrospective.

As of September 1, 2026, the Google News feed indexed under James Charles's creator profile added three items in a single pull: one more obituary for a man named James Charles McManus, a BuzzFeed piece originally published on April 1, 2021, covering the timeline of Charles's DM allegations, and a Teen Vogue article from March 30, 2020, reporting that fans were unhappy about a Rosa collaboration. For the record, none of these items were published this week.

The obituary is standard procedure at this point. The other two are not.

What the feed served

The concrete items, sourced from the September 1 Google News snapshot, are as follows.

  1. James Charles McManus obituary, Pray Funeral Home, Inc. Indexed September 1, 2026. Source: Google News feed for James Charles. The listing links to a funeral home service page. McManus appears to have no documented connection to the YouTube creator, per available records.
  2. BuzzFeed, April 1, 2021: "Here's A Brief Timeline Of James Charles' Most Recent Allegations -- From The DMs To The Apology Video." This piece covered the 2021 period in which Charles publicly acknowledged sending explicit messages to adult men who had described themselves as straight. Charles posted an apology video at that time. The BuzzFeed article is approximately five years old. It surfaced in the feed on September 1, 2026, attributed to Google News indexing.
  3. Teen Vogue, March 30, 2020: "Fans Aren't Happy About That Rosa and James Charles Collaboration." The article, more than six years old as of this writing, covered audience pushback against a brand collaboration. It surfaced in the same September 1 feed pull, attributed to Google News indexing.

What this adds to the documented pattern

The known timeline already shows 2019 Tati Westbrook coverage surfacing on August 27, 2026. The addition of 2020 and 2021 material means the feed has now, across documented snapshots, pulled in actual Charles-adjacent controversy coverage spanning at least three separate scandal cycles, mixed into the same stream as New Zealand obituaries, arrest reports, and Mshale sports articles.

The feed floor was last documented at June 2013 as of August 27. The 2020 and 2021 items do not push that floor lower. They simply add to the evidence that the algorithm is not sorting by relevance, recency, or anything else a reasonable person would name.

The McManus obituary continues a streak of namesake death notices indexed under the creator's coverage going back to at least August 1, when an estate notice for James Charles Dotts appeared in the same feed.

What happens next

Open questions as of September 1: whether the feed will surface coverage from the 2017 or 2016 era of Charles's career; whether Google has any process by which a creator can flag systematic misindexing of this kind; and whether the McManus funeral home listing will recirculate, as the James Braun obituary URL did three times across August.
