Two items surfaced in the Google News feed indexed under YouTube beauty creator James Charles on August 21, 2026. One was new: an obituary for a man named James Charles Knox, published by The Daily Gazette. The other was not new at all. It was a Legacy.com obituary for a man named James Braun, hosted by the NZ Herald, and it had now appeared in that feed on at least three separate occasions: August 17, August 18, and again today.

Knox is the 15th distinct non-creator name documented in this feed since late July. Braun is something else: evidence that the feed does not simply accumulate new entries and move on. It loops.

The Knox Entry

The Daily Gazette is a regional American newspaper. The obituary it published for James Charles Knox carries no dateline in the indexed headline, only the man's name and the outlet. Google News surfaced it on August 21 under queries associated with the creator James Charles, who has approximately 45 million YouTube subscribers and no apparent connection to The Daily Gazette's coverage area.

Knox joins a list that now includes James Charles Spragg of Madison, Ohio; James Charles Poole of Bloomingdale, Georgia; James Charles Harris; James Charles Miller; James Charles Williams; James Charles Woodward Jr.; Claude James Charles Sr.; James Charles Connell, 70; James Charles Dempster of Barrie, Ontario; and James Charles Dotts, whose estate notice ran in The Courier Express on August 1. That is before accounting for James Scott, James Woodward of Maumee, Ohio, and James Braun of New Zealand, all of whom share only partial name overlap with the creator.

For the record, none of these individuals are the James Charles who posts makeup tutorials and travel vlogs. The most recent upload from that James Charles was a Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan travel vlog posted June 21, 2026.

The mechanism driving these misfires is not mysterious. Google News indexes content by named entity association. When a regional outlet publishes an obituary containing the words "James" and "Charles" in sequence, the algorithm registers a relevance signal against a creator whose name matches that string. The result is a news feed that functions, in practice, as a passive mortality archive for men named James Charles across the English-speaking world.

The Braun Problem Is Different

James Braun is not named James Charles. His obituary, published through Legacy.com and indexed by the NZ Herald, first appeared in the James Charles Google News feed on August 17. It appeared again on August 18. On August 21, the same URL surfaced a third time.

A single obituary appearing in a creator's news feed is a data artifact. The same URL appearing three times across four days is a distinct behavior. Google News, under normal conditions, deduplicates articles. Repeated surfacing of the same URL suggests either that the article is being re-indexed after updates, that the NZ Herald's RSS feed is re-emitting the item, or that the deduplication logic is failing on this particular piece of content. Which of those is occurring is not established by the available signal.

What is established: the Braun obituary has now been indexed under James Charles's creator coverage more times than most legitimate entertainment news pieces about the creator himself.

The NZ Herald's involvement was already notable. When the first Braun obituary appeared on August 17, it marked the feed's first confirmed international reach into New Zealand. The BarrieToday obituary for James Charles Dempster, published July 15, had previously represented the feed's Canadian footprint. The phenomenon had, by mid-August, become demonstrably global. The Braun URL's repeated reappearance adds a second variable: not just geographic spread, but temporal persistence.

What Happens Next

Open questions as of August 21, 2026: whether The Daily Gazette's Knox obituary will re-surface in the feed in the manner the Braun obituary has; whether Google News will take any corrective action on the Braun URL's repeated indexing; whether the creator James Charles has acknowledged, on any platform, that his Google News feed is currently generating a running record of strangers' deaths; and whether any outlet beyond MAFKR has begun tracking the cumulative count of non-creator names indexed under his coverage.
