The GOP Made Hasan Piker a Thirst Trap. The Left Is Now Taking Notes.
Daily Kos ran the piece. 'Meat pics' was in the headline. Darlings, we have entered a new era of political branding.
The Republican National Committee put Hasan Piker's underwear photo on a convention jumbotron to shame him. It did not do that. And now, per a piece published by Daily Kos on September 12th, the broader left apparently has a new strategy: lean in.
The Daily Kos headline alone is a lot. "Medicare for all and 'meat pics': Men of the left lean into sex appeal." That is a sentence that exists. In the year 2026. About a Medicare policy platform.
The piece, per its framing, argues that left-wing men are increasingly treating physical appeal not as a liability but as a deliberate part of their political identity, with Piker's current moment as exhibit A. A moment.
OregonLive's coverage of the jumbotron incident captured the internet's prevailing read earlier this week: Republicans were roundly mocked for screening what commenters were already calling a "thirst trap" video at a midterm convention. The mockery was not aimed at Piker.
Jessica Tarlov, per Mediaite, twisted the knife on Fox News by calling the men gathered around the jumbotron "betas standing around looking at a half-naked socialist." That line traveled. Widely. The messaging department at the RNC did not have a great week.
Fox News did try to course-correct, airing man-on-the-street reaction footage of Americans responding to what the chyron described as socialists arguing the U.S. deserved 9/11. The segment was real. The attempt to pivot back to the substantive criticism was also real. Whether it landed is a separate question, given that "Hasan Piker shirtless" was, according to multiple outlets, still pulling search traffic days later.
Some corners of the internet pushed back on the Daily Kos framing directly, arguing that aestheticizing politics is a race the left will lose and that treating a streamer's physique as a policy argument is, to be gentle about it, a journey of its own. We love growth.
Others pointed out that the whole sequence, from jumbotron to thirst-trap memes to a Daily Kos op-ed about "meat pics," was generated entirely by the GOP's own choices. Nobody made them put the photo on a screen the size of a billboard.
And if this feels like a detour from the actual Piker controversies, the 9/11 commentary and the lawsuit and the El-Sayed campaign fallout, it is worth remembering that this is where we are now. The man allegedly said something genuinely incendiary about America deserving a terror attack, and the dominant cultural artifact of the week is a debate about whether his abs are good for the left's brand.
My loves, keep receipts. Because whoever wins the next news cycle, the jumbotron guys are going to be in a documentary someday.
