NPR Says Hasan Piker Is 'Not Worried.' He Is Correct Not to Be.
Mai Vang just walked onto his stream. NPR just handed him a megaphone. Fox News is screaming into the void. The man is fine.
Hasan Piker is not worried about being a political boogeyman this midterms season, according to NPR. And darlings, the receipts back him up completely.
Let's take stock of the last 72 hours. NPR ran two separate pieces on him, one of which lets him defend his own rhetoric in his own words. Fox News published a headline screaming that Democrats "tried to hide" Piker but "he won't go away." Hide him where, exactly? Under what rock does one store a man who just appeared in a Georgia Senate debate without being physically present in Georgia?
And then, the kill shot: Mai Vang, the Sacramento congressional candidate who spent the better part of two weeks absorbing blows from a councilmember, local press, and the California Globe over her association with Piker, went ahead and appeared on his stream anyway, per the Sacramento Bee. She addressed the campaign attacks directly. On his platform. In front of his audience.
That is not a politician running away from a liability. That is a politician calculating that the liability is actually an asset, and she may not be wrong.
The Fox News thesis, faithfully recycled every 48 hours, is that the left is embarrassed by Piker and desperate to distance itself. The evidence keeps refusing to cooperate. If this feels familiar, it is because the same outlets called him a problem for Abdul El-Sayed, a problem for the Matsui race, a problem for the DSA broadly, and yet here comes Vang, walking through the front door.
The NPR framing is the more honest one: he is unbothered. He defended the Ziwe interview as a character. He defended the MAGA comment. He showed up at NYU. He is, by any objective measure, having a moment that most cable pundits would sell a kidney for.
We wish the discourse strength in this trying time of being completely ignored by its subject.
My loves, when NPR and Fox News are both writing about you on the same morning and the politicians keep showing up anyway, you are not losing. Piker knows it. The only people who don't are the ones writing the outrage headlines he will screenshot for content tomorrow.
