Jamie Raskin Called Hasan Piker's Hamas Rhetoric an 'Irrelevant Distraction.' The Receipts Would Like a Word.

Darlings, we have a new entrant in the 'Democrats who picked a lane and may regret it' sweepstakes, and his name is Jamie Raskin.

Per the New York PostYahoo Newsand the Washington Examinerall reporting on or around September 6th, Rep. Raskin publicly dismissed Hasan Piker's alleged pro-Hamas sentiment as, quote, an 'irrelevant distraction.' The specific trigger, per those same outlets: a clip in which Piker allegedly said he would vote for Hamas over Israel. Irrelevant. Distraction. Those are the words a sitting congressman chose.

Now, is that a defense? Raskin would presumably say no. But darling, that is not a denial of what Piker allegedly said, and it is very much a characterization of how seriously Congress should take it. The right flank noticed within hours. The Hill's response piece, published September 7th, was headlined around the media 'making excuses' for the Senate nominee who 'empowered' Piker. So. We are now in the excuses phase, apparently.

Here is what the receipts actually show, source by source:

1. The New York Post reported September 7th that Raskin explicitly called Piker's rhetoric around Hamas 'irrelevant distraction' language, citing the streamer's alleged statement that he would vote for Hamas over Israel.
2. The Washington Examineralso September 6th, ran substantially the same quote under the framing 'pro-Hamas sentiment,' adding its own editorializing but drawing from the same Raskin statement.
3. Yahoo News corroborated the Raskin quote on September 6th without the Examiner's framing, presenting it as a straightforward congressional response to ongoing Piker controversy.
4. The HillSeptember 7th, published a piece connecting the media's posture toward El-Sayed directly to this dynamic, arguing that outlets are running cover for the Senate nominee over his association with Piker rather than pressing him on it.
5. Fox News reported separately, also September 6th, that Piker himself brushed off Democrats who see him as a liability and named his preferred 2028 presidential pick, which, sure, very conciliatory energy from a man currently being called a party-wrecker on four cable channels simultaneously.

And if this feels familiar, it's because the AOC 'absolutely ludicrous' play from September 5th already tried this framing, and that did not exactly cool the discourse. Now Raskin has handed critics a cleaner quote and a shinier headline.

We wish Rep. Raskin strength in this trying time of his own making. The 'irrelevant distraction' clip is already in the Fox B-roll rotation, my loves, and it will be there through November.

Piker, for his part, is reportedly unbothered and has a 2028 horse picked out. A journey. We love growth. We just wish it came with slightly better optics for everyone downstream of it.
