James Charles's Google News Feed Just Surfaced a 2012 Obituary. The Six-Month Lag Record Has Been Obliterated.

A mortuary notice for one James Charles Patterson, dated April 27, 2012, has appeared in the beauty creator's Google News aggregator in late October 2026. That is a fourteen-year gap. MAFKR has the numbers.

On or around October 27, 2026, a Google News aggregator tied to the search term "James Charles" indexed a mortuary listing for a man named James Charles Patterson, published by Leavitt's Mortuary and dated April 27, 2012. The notice has no connection to James Charles the YouTuber, who was eleven years old when it was originally filed. The lag between publication and indexing is approximately fourteen years and six months.

For the record, this feed previously set what MAFKR documented as a benchmark: in October 2026, it surfaced a James Charles Parnell obituary from April of the same year, a delay of roughly six months. That record has now been beaten by a factor of roughly twenty-nine.

A second obituary also appeared in the feed, this one for a James Charles Russell via Life and Legacy Funerals and Cremations, indexed on October 23, 2026. No publication date for that listing has been confirmed independently, but its presence continues a pattern that, at this point, spans at least a dozen documented instances across the past several months of MAFKR monitoring.

The Scope of the Problem, Documented

Google News personalizes and aggregates results based on search history, subscriptions, and keyword signals. A feed keyed to "James Charles" should, in theory, surface content about the creator born James Charles Dickinson, who has 24 million YouTube subscribers and whose career milestones include a 2019 Coachella palette launch and a prolonged public controversy beginning in 2021. What it has apparently also decided to surface is a rolling archive of obituaries for unrelated men who share the name.

The documented timeline of this phenomenon, as established across MAFKR's coverage, now includes entries from 2018, 2020, 2025, and, as of this week, 2012. The feed has also indexed, during the same general period, an Australian crime report, a UK jewellery fraud conviction, a Charles Barkley quote about LeBron James, and a 2023 celebrity no-makeup gallery. The obituaries, however, have been the most consistent thread.

To be precise about the Patterson entry: Leavitt's Mortuary is a Utah-based funeral home with a web presence that predates many of the algorithmic systems now pulling its content. An obituary filed there in April 2012 would have been a static HTML page for most of its existence, not a document designed for active aggregation. That Google's systems found it, evaluated it as relevant to a query about a 26-year-old beauty influencer, and surfaced it in late 2026 is not a thing the feed's designers have commented on publicly.

What the Escalation Means, Mechanically

Each time MAFKR has covered a new obituary entry in this feed, the implied question has been whether the algorithm would self-correct or whether the pattern would deepen. The six-month-lag article, published after the Parnell notice surfaced, treated that delay as a kind of outer boundary. The 2012 Patterson obituary suggests there is no effective outer boundary the feed is respecting.

Google's news aggregation systems rely on signals including domain authority, keyword match, and recency weighting. The fact that a 2012 mortuary page cleared the recency filter, if one was applied at all, is either a miscalibration or an indication that the page was re-indexed recently by a third party or aggregator, which would shift the apparent date of
