Hasan Piker Just Admitted He Helped Lose Another Race. He Also Wants to Outlaw Thanksgiving. A Journey.

Darlings, we have arrived at a rare and precious thing: a moment of accountability, delivered loudly, on stream, immediately undercut by a demand to abolish a national holiday.

Wisconsin state legislator Francesca Hong, the DSA-backed socialist candidate for governor, lost her primary on August 12. Lost it badly enough that Hasan Piker went on stream, allegedly said "F*** Thanksgiving" and "outlaw boomers," and warned that "the knives will be out." Per the Washington Examiner and the New York Postwho were absolutely going to cover this no matter what, it was a meltdown of considerable energy.

And then came the part nobody expected.

The Admission Nobody Ordered

According to the Washington TimesPiker said on stream that he is "part of why Hong lost" in Wisconsin. The Washington Examiner followed with a separate clip in which he allegedly conceded he "shouldn't be the biggest surrogate" for a political campaign. Two separate acknowledgments in one evening. That is not nothing. That is, in fact, a journey of sorts.

Should we give him credit? We will note it. The receipts exist. He said it.

But here is the thing about saying you shouldn't be the biggest surrogate for a campaign: the time to say that is before two consecutive candidates you publicly backed face electoral headwinds partially attributed to your association with them. Abdul El-Sayed won his primary, yes, but has spent the week since performing an elaborate public distancing from Piker on national television. Hong did not win at all. The pattern is not invisible.

And if this feels familiar, it's because Piker spent the previous week insisting he was done apologizing for comments about 9/11, that his remarks were "intentionally provocative," and that anyone who disagreed could take it up with his general energy. Then, per The Hillby August 12, he was saying he "could've phrased" the America-deserved-9/11 comment better. Now we're workshopping it. Growth! We love growth. Allegedly.

The Wall Street Journal Would Like a Word

While Piker was eulogizing Thanksgiving, the Wall Street Journal published a piece on August 13 headlined "Online Agitator Hasan Piker Is Driving Democrats Up a Wall." That headline is doing real work. "Online agitator" is the WSJ's version of scorched earth and they deployed it with the quiet confidence of an institution that has been around since 1889 and will be around long after all of us are gone.

Congresswoman Haley Stevens also weighed in on El-Sayed's ties to Piker, per NewsNation, adding another elected Democrat to the roster of people who have now publicly put distance between themselves and the streamer. The list grows.

Meanwhile, Piker reportedly cheered a Zohran Mamdani campaign aide who apparently went, per WFIN, "beast mode" with an "impoverish the White middle-class" remark. The audacity of adding new material to the pile while the old pile is still actively on fire is, genuinely, a specific kind of commitment to the bit.

CJ Pearson hit Fox News to blast "far-left Democrats" over Piker ties. The Charlie Kirk flashback clips are making the rounds on Fox Business. The Detroit News ran a column arguing El-Sayed should be judged by the company he keeps. The right-wing media machine, my loves, has found its content and it is eating well this August.

What the Scoreboard Actually Says

Let's be honest about what has happened here across the past two weeks. Piker stumped hard for El-Sayed in Michigan, El-Sayed won, and then El-Sayed called him "a streamer" and disavowed his 9/11 comments on national television before the general election campaign had even started. Piker stumped for Hong in Wisconsin, Hong lost, and Piker admitted partial responsibility on stream. His mother told the NY Post his China views were "outlandish." The University of Washington uninvited him. Laura Loomer accused him of dog abuse using an FBI reward announcement as evidence, which is its own paragraph in the history of American political discourse.

The WSJ profile, the Haley Stevens statement, the Fox News carousel: these are not signs that Piker is being ignored. They are signs that the mainstream political apparatus, from both directions, has decided he is worth the engagement. In terms of sheer coverage tonnage, he is winning something. What that something translates to in actual electoral math is the question nobody has cleanly answered.

He has, per multiple clips this week, admitted he is too prominent a surrogate, admitted his phrasing could have been better, and then in the same breath threatened that knives will be out and called for the abolition of Thanksgiving. We wish him clarity in this trying season of his own contradictions.

If the pattern holds, expect him to be the most-discussed person in a Democrat's orbit and the first person that Democrat distances from, simultaneously, in every race he touches from here to November.
