Hasan Piker Defended the People Who Screamed 'Genocide' at a Fellow Progressive on Oct. 7. The Left Is Eating Itself and He Is Holding the Fork.
Backing anti-Zionist hecklers who accosted Zohran Mamdani at an Oct. 7 vigil was not the vibe, and yet here we are.
Hasan Piker has finally found a way to unite the right and the center-left: give them both something to point at.
According to reporting from Mediaite and the New York Post, Piker publicly backed anti-Zionist protesters who allegedly accosted New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani at an Oct. 7 remembrance vigil. Mamdani, for the unfamiliar, is not a Republican. He is not a centrist. He is one of the most prominently left-wing elected officials in the country. And still.
The critics calling it "the left eating itself" are not wrong, darlings. When your political energy goes toward heckling a fellow progressive at a grief event on the anniversary of a massacre, you have made a choice. Piker made his, publicly, per the clip, and the scoreboard does not look great.
What makes this particular moment rich is the company it attracts. Ashley St. Clair, who is not exactly a Piker ally on any other Tuesday, is reportedly pushing back on the backlash surrounding him, per Modern Ghana's pickup of her comments. Now that is a sentence.} When a conservative commentator becomes your unlikely defender, you have officially left the map.
And if this feels familiar, it is because Piker has a documented habit of finding the most maximally complicated position in any given news cycle and planting a flag there. The "9/11" comment. The "play ball" threat to Talarico. The racial profiling accusations over his "good" and "bad" white voter framework. Each time, the controversy machine runs, he calls it a double standard, and the Fox News newsletter gets another entry. A journey.
Abdul El-Sayed, who allegedly called Piker privately to beg for a rhetoric cooldown and then told Fox News there is "no relationship" between them, is watching all of this from Michigan. We wish him strength in this trying time of someone else's making.
Keep receipts. The Oct. 7 anniversary just handed his critics their cleanest attack line yet, and he handed it to them himself.
