Hasan Piker Called Hamas 'Far More Moderate.' Darlings, the Timing Is Extraordinary.
Every Democrat who defended him this week is now doing a very specific facial expression.
He had the whole party fighting for him and he opened his mouth anyway.
According to Fox News reporting out this morning, Piker allegedly called Hamas "far more moderate" in comments that are now ricocheting through every corner of political media that was already on fire. Allegedly. But darlings, "allegedly" is doing a lot of heavy lifting when the clips are right there.
Think about the calendar here. Moskowitz just won his primary. Ro Khanna went on television and called Democrats who'd distance from Piker "weak." AOC defended him. El-Sayed staked his entire general election on the theory that the streamer is a net positive. The party spent a genuinely exhausting week litigating whether Piker was a liability or an asset. And then.
And then this.
Jewish groups are already warning Democrats, per the same Fox report. Which means every vulnerable House member who'd been quietly hoping this would blow over now gets to wake up to a fresh news cycle built specifically around the worst possible characterization of Piker's views on Gaza. We wish them strength in this trying time of someone else's making.
The Khanna defense, which was coherent 48 hours ago, ages in real time. The argument was: ditching Piker signals weakness, young voters notice, Republicans weaponize the split anyway so why give ground. Fine. Reasonable political logic. Less reasonable when the person you're defending hands the opposition a brand new quote about a designated terror organization being "far more moderate."
And if this feels familiar, it's because the entire Piker saga has had this exact shape from the start. Someone defends him. He says something that makes the defense harder. Someone else defends the defense. Repeat until a cartoon appears in the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Keep receipts, my loves, because Angie Nixon is out here telling cameras she barely knows the man, and she is the smartest person in this story right now.
If the Democrats wanted a streamer to expand their coalition, they needed one who knew when to stop streaming.
