El-Sayed Tells CBS It's the 'Third Time You've Asked About a Twitch Streamer in California.' Hakeem Jeffries Then Answered the Question Anyway.

Darlings, that is not a dodge. That is a man standing in a burning building, pointing at the smoke detector.

Abdul El-Sayed, Michigan Democratic Senate candidate and the person who allegedly personally recruited said Twitch streamer to campaign for him (per Piker's own account, which El-Sayed has conspicuously not denied on the record), bristled at CBS News correspondent Weijia Jiang on September 13th when she pressed him about Hasan Piker. Again. His answer was essentially: stop asking me this. Her implicit answer was: then give me a better one.

The audacity of a journalist doing her job.

This came one day after El-Sayed addressed similar questions on C-SPAN, per that network's own coverage, making this at minimum a 48-hour stretch of Piker questions that El-Sayed has failed to make stop. The more he bristles, the more the clip spreads. The more the clip spreads, the more journalists ask. This is the cycle. This is the journey.

Jeffries Walks In and Answers the Question El-Sayed Won't

While El-Sayed was busy counting reporter questions, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries was apparently happy to weigh in. Per reporting surfaced September 13th, Jeffries addressed how Democrats should handle Piker. The specific framing of his answer is, at this stage, attributed to coverage rather than a direct transcript we can quote, but the fact that the second-most-powerful Democrat in Washington is now publicly opining on a Twitch streamer's role in the party is, itself, the story.

El-Sayed says stop asking. Jeffries says here is my position. These are not the same posture, and the contrast is not flattering to the candidate who actually has Piker attached to his campaign like a very loud barnacle.

And if this feels familiar, it's because El-Sayed has been running this play since August. "Nobody speaks for this campaign besides me," he said in late August. Then Piker kept speaking. Then El-Sayed kept getting asked about it. Then El-Sayed kept expressing variations of exhaustion at being asked about it. The receipts do not improve with repetition.

The David Duke Comparison and Why Democrats Are Sweating It

The Daily Signal, not a publication that roots for El-Sayed, published a piece on September 13th making a pointed argument: David Duke was denounced loudly and immediately by Republican leadership when he ran for office in Louisiana. Democrats, the piece argues, have not done the equivalent with Piker.

Now, the Daily Signal is a conservative outlet with an agenda, and comparison pieces like this one are designed to wound rather than illuminate. But here is the problem: the comparison lands because Democrats have not, in fact, produced a clean, unified, loud denunciation. What they have produced is a fog of varying statements, strategic distances, Jamie Raskin calling the Hamas rhetoric an "irrelevant distraction," and Hakeem Jeffries giving guidance on "how to handle" someone rather than simply saying the words.

We love nuance. Nuance does not poll.

The Judicial Watch lawsuit is still active, allegedly, per earlier reporting. The 9/11 comment rollback drew boos from Piker's own supporters, per accounts that surfaced September 11th. El-Sayed posted a 9/11 social media message that triggered its own separate firestorm, also September 12th. And through all of it, the question CBS kept asking, the one El-Sayed called the third question about a Twitch streamer in California, remains unanswered in any satisfying way: did you ask him to campaign for you, and do you want him to stop?

Darling, that is not a complicated question.

The counter-argument, which El-Sayed's team would presumably make, is that every answer only feeds the story. Keep receipts on that theory, because three CBS questions in suggests it is not working. You do not make a press corps stop asking something by being visibly irritated that they are asking it. You make them stop asking by giving them an answer so complete and so boring that there is nothing left to ask. El-Sayed has not done that. He has instead done the political equivalent of sighing loudly at the dinner table, which historically does not resolve anything.

Jeffries stepping in is either a rescue operation or a signal that the party has decided someone with more credibility needs to carry this particular bag. Either reading is bad for El-Sayed's independence narrative. Either reading suggests that the "Twitch streamer in California" is, in fact, a Michigan Senate race problem that has now reached all the way to the House Minority Leader's media schedule.

The GOP put Piker's underwear on a Jumbotron last week and accidentally made him a thirst trap. The Daily Signal is now comparing him to David Duke. Jessica Tarlov called the Jumbotron crowd "betas" on Fox News. The streamer in question is in California, allegedly watching all of this happen to his name, his follower count reportedly unharmed.
