Bungie Announces Destiny 3 Event for June 17 — Darlings, the Body Is Still Warm

Destiny 2 isn't even cold yet and Bungie is already teasing what comes next. The audacity of this studio is genuinely unmatched.

Darlings, the timeline on this one. Destiny 2 released its weepy 'So Far, Together' farewell trailer, ex-devs went on record saying the studio was days from collapse, servers buckled under a 160,000-Guardian grief surge — and Bungie has apparently decided this is the exact correct moment to announce a Destiny 3 event happening June 17, per OpenCritic.

June. Seventeenth. As in, less than a week from today. As in, before the Destiny 2 community has had a single full news cycle to process their loss.

We wish them peace in this trying time of their own scheduling.

Per the report, the event is "officially happening" — which is doing a lot of heavy lifting as a descriptor, but here we are. No further details have been confirmed about what exactly will be revealed, demonstrated, or apologized for.

And if this feels familiar, it's because Bungie's entire late-era Destiny 2 playbook involved announcing the next big thing while the current big thing was actively on fire. A pattern, some might say. A brand, others might argue.

Now: the player surge is real. Per Eurogamer, Destiny 2 hit numbers "we have not witnessed in nearly two years" — people flooding back for one last look, one last raid, one last argument in the Tower. PC Gamer called it "the best time to play Destiny 2 in years" coinciding with its end, which is either beautiful or a corporate indictment, depending on your mood.

Forbes, meanwhile, published a piece titled 'The Only Good Thing About Destiny 2 Ending' — darling that is not a glowing send-off.

"160k Guardians Assemble: The Final Flame of 'Destiny 2'" — Inven Global, eulogizing a game that apparently needed to die to become popular again.

So what exactly is this June 17 event? A teaser? A full reveal? A live-service apology tour? Bungie, characteristically, is not saying more than it needs to. Keep receipts, Guardians. The studio that allegedly needed an emergency $3.6 billion Sony rescue is now apparently ready to sell you a sequel.

My loves, Marathon better be exceptional — because right now Bungie is betting two franchises on a studio that, by their own ex-employees' accounts, was weeks from shutting its doors. A Destiny 3 event before D2 is even in the ground is either the most confident pivot in gaming history or the most chaotic. We predict: chaotic, with microtransactions.
