Abdul El-Sayed won the Michigan Senate primary, per Time Magazine and The Detroit News. And if you thought victory might inspire a moment of magnanimity from the man who helped him get there, we have some news.

The Washington Examiner declared Hasan Piker "both a Democratic kingmaker and a political liability" in a single headline, which is honestly the most efficient summary of this entire saga we have encountered. We commend their economy of language.

Here is what the post-primary night actually produced, attributed to the outlets that reported it:

  1. The victory speech, allegedly. Per National Review, Piker declared at the El-Sayed victory party that socialism is the "real America First" movement. No misquote is alleged here. That is reportedly the actual framing he chose, on the night of the win, in a room full of cameras.
  2. The rejection of reconciliation. According to Fox News and the Free Beacon, Piker explicitly rejected calls to "mend bridges" with the broader Democratic coalition after the race. El-Sayed, per Fox News, separately vowed to "mend fences." Two men, one victory, completely different post-game strategies.
  3. The quote. Per the Free Beacon, the Washington Examiner, and the New York Post, Piker called Haley Stevens supporters "unbelievably Islamophobic pieces of s---" during or around the watch party. Multiple outlets ran it. Darling that is not a whisper.
  4. The moderate concession. Rep. Dingell, per Yahoo News, said she does not agree with Piker but acknowledged, and we are paraphrasing here, that he has a lot of followers. That is a sitting congresswoman doing the math out loud. Keep receipts.
  5. The press watchdog entry. Fox News separately published a piece in which an unnamed watchdog alleged that the press may "water down" the El-Sayed and Piker controversies in order to lock up Michigan for Democrats in the general. We are not endorsing the framing. We are noting it exists and is now in the discourse.
  6. The prestige magazine pile-on. The Atlantic published a piece titled "Abdul El-Sayed's Next Big Challenge" and The New Yorker weighed in on his electability. A Twitch streamer's campaign surrogate is now the subject of concurrent Atlantic and New Yorker analysis. A journey.

And if this feels familiar, it is because Piker has now, twice in the same election cycle, chosen the loudest available exit from a moment that could have been a quiet win. The audacity has a pattern.

Rep. Dingell did the follower-count math so the party doesn't have to. The Atlantic and the New Yorker are doing the electability math. Nobody, apparently, is doing the coalition math.

My loves, we wish him strength in this trying time of his own making, and we fully expect the general election to be very, very loud.
