2,400 RSVPs. 300 Chairs Filled. One Streamer Trespassed. The UT Austin Hasan Piker Show Was a Lot.
The most controversial campus event of the fall drew a crowd roughly the size of a Cracker Barrel on a Sunday. Also DariusIRL got escorted out and Destiny is mad. Also Republicans are privately admitting none of this is working. Cool week!
Two thousand four hundred people signed up. Three hundred showed. That is the entire Hasan Piker UT Austin event in one brutal fraction, darlings, and no amount of Fox News countdown clocks can make it hit different.
And if this feels familiar, it's because the gap between Piker's cultural footprint and his actual turnout has been the story all along. The controversy is enormous. The room, apparently, was not.
But fine. Three hundred people in a smaller venue is still three hundred people who came to see a Twitch streamer after Texas lawmakers spent a week trying to stop him. Piker reportedly told the crowd he cannot understand why women keep having sex with Ken Paxton, which, genuinely, same. He called the whole venue saga Republican cancel culture. He was not wrong about that part, and the Texas Democrats who spent the week saying nothing are not exactly positioned to argue.
Then there is the DariusIRL situation. Per reporting from the Times of India, fellow streamer DariusIRL was allegedly criminally trespassed from the event, which has sparked a fresh feud with Destiny. A moment. The most politically charged campus appearance of the calendar year apparently also generated an IRL streamer beef as a byproduct. The audacity of this news cycle to keep giving.
Meanwhile, Zeteo is reporting that top Republicans are privately admitting their Piker attacks are a dud. Not a liability. Not the recruitment tool Fox News promised. A dud. The weeks of Jesse Watters purring at cat-ear photos, the Ted Cruz floor speeches, the Mike Rogers calling Abdul El-Sayed a con man for knowing Piker exists: allegedly, per sources who work in the very machine running those attacks, not moving the needle.
UT Austin Jewish groups hosted a former Israeli hostage across campus to counter the event. Jewish Currents published a piece explaining why they invited Piker to JC Live. The discourse is eating itself from four directions simultaneously, my loves, and the man at the center of it filled about twelve percent of his RSVP list.
We wish him strength in this trying time of his own making. The receipts, as always, will keep.
