Hasan Piker spoke at a College Democrats convention in a Mao-inspired suit less than a week ago. Since then, the structural damage to the American center-left has been ongoing, loud, and frankly impressive in its breadth.

J Street Defends Itself. The Jewish Caucus Does Not Accept This.

The backlash to J Street co-sponsoring the College Democrats event that hosted Piker has now forced the organization to go on the record. And if J Street thought defending itself publicly would settle things down, the College Democrats' own Jewish Caucus had other plans. J Street, to be clear, has not backed down, per the reporting. Their position, according to JTA, is that they stand by the co-sponsorship. Now you've picked a lane. Whether that lane leads somewhere good is a question several Jewish publications are apparently quite motivated to answer.

A letter published today in the Cap Times argues that Wisconsin assemblywoman Francesca Hong should not be fundraising with, and we are quoting the framing here, "antisemitic influencers." That one is still rippling out from the Hong-Piker stream appearance Piker claimed she downplayed and she absolutely did downplay. The Wisconsin political fallout from a single Twitch stream continues, remarkably, to compound.

George Floyd Is Now Allegedly in a Cuba Conspiracy. Yes, You Read That.

Here is where we must pause, take a breath, and report something that sounds like satire but is, per LGBTQ Nation's coverage today, apparently real.

The Trump administration has accused Hasan Piker, Zohran Mamdani, Black Lives Matter, and George Floyd of conspiring with Cuba. George Floyd, who died in May 2020, has allegedly been named in a federal document accusing him of some form of coordination with the Cuban government. We are not editorializing on what this means legally or politically. We are simply telling you that a man who has been dead for six years is, according to reporting on this document, apparently a Cuban operative in the eyes of the current administration.

Piker is in that list. Mamdani, the New York City mayoral candidate, is in that list. The Washington Examiner, for its part, published a piece today calling for a new Red Scare. The National Review ran something titled "Excesses." Sky News Australia devoted multiple segments to Piker's convention appearance, with host Rita Panahi mocking what they called his "communist-style speech," and a separate Sky News segment described him as channeling a "mass-murdering dictator."

And if this feels familiar, it's because the Cuba angle was already in the air. The Daily Wire ran its "Cuban operative" exclusive tied to Piker's Cuba trip back on July 16th. What is new today is the federal document that formalizes this framing and puts Piker in company that includes, again, a deceased man, a socialist candidate currently running for mayor of America's largest city, and the Black Lives Matter organization.

The company one keeps, allegedly.

The Scoreboard, Such As It Is

Let us be precise about what has happened in the span of roughly 72 hours. Piker wore a Mao-adjacent suit to a Democratic youth convention, vowed not to criticize Mao in a resurfaced video that Fox News and Sky News have now run multiple times each, got named in a State Department political terrorism document alongside 42 other Americans, threatened a restraining order against fellow streamer Destiny, and is now allegedly part of a Cuba conspiracy that the federal government believes also involved someone who died before TikTok was mainstream.

J Street is defending a sponsorship decision while the organization it co-sponsored is being publicly condemned by its own Jewish Caucus. A sitting senator used Piker's name to question his own party membership. International conservative media has dedicated significant airtime to a Twitch streamer's wardrobe choices.

My loves, we wish Hasan Piker strength in this trying time of his own making. The receipts are everywhere, the institutions are fracturing, and somewhere in Havana, the Cuban government is allegedly thrilled about all of this.
